Dimethylamine HCl is a chemical compound that is used as a wastewater treatment agent. It is synthesized from the reaction of nitrite ion and fatty acid, which forms an intermediate nitroalkene. This intermediate reacts with dimethylamine to form the final product. The kinetic data for this reaction have been determined by an experiment in which the amount of gas produced was measured over time. Dimethylamine HCl has also been shown to inhibit transfer reactions, as it reacts with inorganic acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Dimethylamine HCl has been shown to be effective for biological treatment of sewage sludge, where it can reduce odor and improve water quality.
