3,3-Dimethyl-1-butene is a glycol ether that is used as a monomer in the production of cationic polymers. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and boiling point of 127°C. 3,3-Dimethyl-1-butene has been shown to react with metal hydroxides to form organometallic compounds capable of catalyzing redox reactions. This monomer also reacts with alkanoic acids to produce chelate ligands that have been shown to be effective in the synthesis of metal complexes. The FTIR spectrum for 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene shows absorption bands at 1087 cm−1 and 1053 cm−1, which are typical for an aliphatic hydrocarbon. The IR spectrum also displays absorption bands at 1730 cm−1 and 1698 cm−1, which correspond to the stretching vibrations of the CH2 group on the butane backbone.
