7-Dehydrostigmasterol is a steroidal compound with radical scavenging activities. It has been shown to have ethanolamine and choline-binding properties, and these may be related to its anti-inflammatory effects. 7-Dehydrostigmasterol also has been shown to inhibit the cellular responses of granulomatous inflammation, including the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The sequence data suggest that 7-dehydrostigmasterol is likely derived from cholesterol or vitamin D3. This compound is biosynthesized in the ciliate Stentor coeruleus by methylation at C7 and hydroxylation at C3, followed by decarboxylation of the side chain at C3. It can also be synthesized from phosphatidylethanolamine in Phellodendron amurense through a series of fatty acid intermediates, as well as from fatty acids such as linoleic acid, oleic
