N,N-Dimethylallylamine is a cationic surfactant with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It has been shown to be effective against opportunistic fungal and bacterial infections. N,N-Dimethylallylamine has been shown to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans by reacting with the red cell membrane and disrupting transport properties. It also causes hydrolysis of inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid, which leads to an increase in pH. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to the hydroxyl group reacting with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) to form ethyl 2-(dimethylamino)acetate (EDAA). EDAA then reacts with amines from the reaction solution and forms an imine bond that inhibits enzyme activity.
