Diethyl sulfone is a chemical that can be used in wastewater treatment. It reacts with the epidermal growth factor found in wastewater to form a copper chloride intermediate. This reaction is catalyzed by water vapor, which also provides the necessary hydrogen peroxide for the reaction. Diethyl sulfone is not toxic to humans at sublethal doses, and is often used as an extraction agent for water samples due to its ability to extract organic compounds from water-insoluble solids. The hydroxyl group on diethyl sulfone can react with copper chloride to form a copper sulfide and this reaction can be followed by oxidation of the fatty acid in diethyl sulfone with hydrogen peroxide. This reaction produces a nitrogen atom, which may then react with magnesium salt to produce solid catalyst particles that are stable in air and have excellent catalytic properties.
