N,N-Dimethylcyanamide is a compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the activity of the inflammatory protein receptor, such as group IIA. This drug binds to the free amino group on the receptor, which prevents it from binding to its substrate. This prevents the activation of inflammatory pathways and reduces inflammation. N,N-Dimethylcyanamide also inhibits amyloid protein formation in vitro and in vivo by binding to hydroxyl groups on the protein's surface. The x-ray crystal structures of this drug reveal a hydrogen fluoride molecule bound at one end of the molecule with two methyl groups attached. The hydrogen fluoride molecule is responsible for inhibiting amyloid protein formation while the methyl groups are responsible for binding to hydroxyl groups on proteins.
