Dichlorvos is a pesticide and insecticide used to control insects. It is one of the most toxic organophosphate pesticides, but it also has low mammalian toxicity. Dichlorvos inhibits the synthesis of proteins by reacting with nucleic acids in the cell's nucleus, leading to DNA damage and cell death. This compound reacts with oxygen in the air to produce an excited state that emits light. Dichlorvos can cause oxidative injury and genotoxic effects in humans and animals. The rate constant for dichlorvos is 0.1/s, which means that if 10% of a population were exposed to this chemical for 1 hour, then 10% of those individuals would be killed as a result of its toxicity.
