1,4-Dicyanobutane is a metastable form of dicyanoacetylene that is generated by the thermal decomposition of 1,4-butanediol. Dicyanobutane has been shown to be an excellent electron donor in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It can also be used as a precursor for adiponitrile and ethylene diamine. The conversion of dicyanobutane to adiponitrile and ethylene diamine proceeds via a radical mechanism with water vapor as the hydrogen donor. Dicyanobutane also possesses excellent transport properties and can serve as a catalyst for process optimization in diamine tetraacetic acid synthesis.
