Dimethyl bromomalonate is an organocatalytic reagent that converts alcohols to aldehydes and ketones, and is used in the synthesis of quinoline derivatives. It is also an effective antibacterial agent against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The reaction mechanism involves conversion of malonic acid to methylmalonic acid by calcium carbonate, which reacts with a second molecule of malonic acid to form methylmalonyl dicarboxylic acid. This intermediate reacts with dimethyl bromomalonate to form the desired product and hydrogen chloride.
