1-Diazo-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (1DNS) is a diazonium salt that can be used for the treatment of wastewater. It reacts with naphthalene to form 1,4-benzenediazonium cation, which is then oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to produce 1,4-benzenediazonium oxide. This compound is highly water soluble and has a low toxicity. The reaction mechanism of 1DNS involves nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon of the diazo group by the hydroxyl anion from water, resulting in the displacement of a sulfonic acid group and formation of an oxoacid. The oxidation products are capable of reacting with other organic compounds in wastewater to form more stable compounds. These reactions will continue until all available reactants have been consumed or until all reactions lead to the formation of nonreactive substances such as carbon dioxide and water
