1,4-Diazepan-5-one is a synthetic compound that has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints, muscles, or other tissues. 1,4-Diazepan-5-one is also used as a research tool for studying protein conformation and peptidomimetics. This drug binds to nucleophilic sites on proteins by forming a covalent bond with the hydroxyl group of serine or threonine residues. The hydrochloric acid in this compound reacts with cyclic amines to form heterocycles such as 2-aminobenzophenone. These heterocycles are reactive at the ring nitrogen atom and can be observed using nmr spectra. The chlorine from this molecule attaches to an azide group and forms a new molecule called an azidoheterocycle.
