Demecolcine is a toxic compound that acts as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. It is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in plants and fungi, and has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Demecolcine has been studied for its toxicity in laboratory animals, with the majority of studies indicating that it causes hemolytic activity, cancer, blood disorders and potassium dichromate poisoning. In addition, demecolcine has been shown to have site-specific toxicity within the liver by inhibiting the function of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
N-Deacetyl-N-formyl colchicine (NDAC) is a choline esterase inhibitor that binds to the active site of acetylcholinesterase in an irreversible manner. NDAC also inhibits other enzymes such as butyrylcholinesterase and carboxylesterases
