Deflazacort is a corticosteroid used to treat chronic inflammatory diseases of the bowel and skin. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human tumor xenografts in mice, although it is not active against bacteria or fungi. Deflazacort has also been shown to have an antimicrobial effect on human cells in culture. The mechanism of action is not known, but may be due to its ability to stimulate production of an antimicrobial protein called defensin. Deflazacort has also been shown to be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and other autoimmune diseases. Deflazacort has a side-effect profile that includes hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and gastrointestinal ulceration.
