Dehydro felodipine is a prodrug of the active drug felodipine. Felodipine belongs to the class of calcium channel blockers and is used for the treatment of high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and hypertensive emergencies. Felodipine's mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to inhibit calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle cells and thereby relaxes these cells. Dehydro felodipine has been shown to be an effective prodrug form of felodipine in humans because it has a longer half-life than its parent compound and can be administered orally. The metabolic profiles of dehydro felodipine are similar to those seen with other drugs in this class, including inhibition of cytochrome P450 enzymes that metabolize fatty acids. Dehydro felodipine has been shown to have haemodynamic effects on humans by reducing peripheral resistance and lowering blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also reduces
