4-(S)-1-Des(methylamine)-1-oxo-2-(R,S)-hydroxy sertraline is a piperazine derivative that has been shown to be an effective medicament for the treatment of depression. This molecule can also act as an analgesic and antihistamine, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. 4-(S)-1-Des(methylamine)-1-oxo-2-(R,S)-hydroxy sertraline can form two conformations: one with the hydrogen atom on carbon 1 (H1) in coplanar conformation with the adjacent carbonyl group (C1), and another with H1 orthogonal to C1. The former conformation is more stable because it minimizes steric interactions between H1 and C0/C3.
