Descarboxyl levofloxacin (DLF) is a prodrug form of levofloxacin that is converted to the active form, levofloxacin, in vivo. DLF has been shown to be more stable than the free drug and it can be used as an alternative to the free drug for the treatment of bacterial infections. DLF has been shown to have good activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but not against other bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Escherichia coli. The major impurities of DLF are methanoic acid, elution time, n-oxide, and genotoxic impurities. The purity of DLF is determined by analytical methods such as HPLC and LC/MS. The linear range for DLF is between 0.1-10 micrograms per milliliter
