O-Desmethyl quinine is a metabolite of quinine. It is a hydroxyl group that is methylated on the ethyl group. O-Desmethyl quinine can be used as a reagent for the analysis of cinchonidine, which has been shown to have anti-malarial activity. The chemical biology of this compound has been studied using tissue culture and reaction mechanisms have been elucidated with solid catalysts. O-Desmethyl quinine also exhibits specific biological properties that are different from those of quinine, including an ability to inhibit the growth of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids in tissue culture. O-Desmethyl quinine can be synthesized by an asymmetric synthesis process and its high values make it suitable for use in photochemical reactions due to its stability under UV light conditions.
