Detomidine hydrochloride is a sedative that is used to manage pain in animals. It has a clinical relevance in the treatment of convulsions, seizures, and tetanus. Detomidine hydrochloride has been shown to have 2-adrenergic receptor agonist activity and can cause the release of energy substrates from cells. The drug also alters cardiac function by causing an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output. Detomidine hydrochloride has been shown to alter microdialysis probes for physiological effects such as estradiol benzoate concentration and cortisol concentrations. This drug also has locomotor activity effects on rats that can be inhibited with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.
