1,5-Diaminonaphthalene (1,5-DNA) is a glycol ester that can be used as a redox indicator. It has been shown to be stable in human serum and is resistant to degradation by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. 1,5-DNA has a high resistance to oxidation when exposed to sodium carbonate and anhydrous sodium. The 1,5-DNA molecule consists of a cyclic peptide with two nitrogen atoms forming a disulfide bond that can easily break down into picolinic acid and malonic acid during the reduction process. The amino group of the amine group on 1,5-DNA is also susceptible to nucleophilic attack from strong bases such as sodium hydroxide.
Picolinic acid was found to be an inhibitor of DNA polymerase in vitro and may act as an antitumor agent by interfering with the synthesis of DNA.
