Description:Diazinon is a sulfamoyl chloride pesticide that inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, which are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of acetylcholine and butyrylcholine. Diazinon is used in wastewater treatment because it inhibits the growth of bacteria that break down organic matter. Diazinon has also been shown to have synergistic effects with estradiol benzoate, an estrogenic agent that is used to treat prostate cancer. The IUPAC name for diazinon is O,O-diethyl O-(1-methylpropyl) phosphorothioate.
