7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole is a carcinogen that is formed when polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) react with DNA. It can bind to nuclear DNA and activate the genotoxic pathway. The carcinogenic potential of 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole has been studied using a model system of cultured human skin cells. This chemical has been shown to induce liver lesions in rats and to have genotoxic effects in vitro. 7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole induces apoptosis by inhibiting protein synthesis and blocking the activation of caspases. 7H-Dibenzo[c,g]carbazole also inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes involved in drug metabolism by binding to their heme moiety.
