Description:1,3-Dibenzyloxy-2-propanol is a nucleophilic compound that has been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus. This antiviral agent is also cytotoxic and has high molecular weight. It is acetylated to produce the corresponding acetate ester, which is scalable for industrial production. 1,3-Dibenzyloxy-2-propanol binds to the carbohydrate ligand on the surface of cells and inhibits the growth of viruses by trapping them in a hydrophobic environment. This drug has been shown to inhibit ganciclovir phosphorylation and can be used as an antiviral agent if combined with other drugs such as cannabinoids or nervous system agents. 1,3-Dibenzyloxy-2-propanol also reacts with endogenous ligands such as histidine, glutathione and dopamine receptors.
