Dihydro nicotyrine is an alkaloid that is toxic to plants and microorganisms. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of hydroxylase enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of aromatic compounds, such as tyrosine and phenylalanine. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of dopamine and norepinephrine, which may be involved in the development of Parkinson's disease. Dihydro nicotyrine is also a substrate for hydroxylases that have been sequenced from various strains of bacteria. The enzyme has been cloned from a wild-type strain of Escherichia coli, but not from soil bacteria or other organisms. Dihydro nicotyrine can be synthesized by reacting benzaldehyde with 2-amino-3-hydroxybenzoic acid in an organic solvent.
