Diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) is a chemical compound that is used as an additive in many plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride. It is also used as an extractant or matrix effect for sample preparation and analytical methods, such as gas chromatography. DIDP has been shown to promote the growth of colorectal adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. Moreover, it has been found to be toxic to liver cells and to cause kidney damage. The toxicity of DIDP is related to its ability to inhibit fatty acid transport and alter the membrane structure of cells. DIDP can also cause potassium dichromate toxicity by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS can lead to cell death through signal pathways that involve protein kinase C-mediated activation of nuclear factor kappa-beta (NF-κβ), which regulates transcription of genes involved in apoptosis.
