Dimethoate is a non-systemic insecticide that inhibits the function of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the nervous system. This leads to a loss of muscle control and eventually death. Dimethoate has been shown to be effective against the larvae of mosquitoes, flies, and beetles at sublethal doses. It also inhibits photosynthetic activity in plants by binding to amide groups on chlorophyll and carotenoids. Dimethoate has been detected in the diet at detectable concentrations. The mechanism of action is still unclear, but it is thought to inhibit photosynthetic pigments by cationic polymerization or ionizing radiation.br>br>br>
