This reaction is catalyzed by thionyl chloride. The product of this reaction can be reacted with a chloride, naphthalene or sulfinyl chloride to form five-membered diprotonated products. 1,6-Dimethoxynaphthalene also reacts with hydrosulfite to form sulfinyl functional groups, which can then be used as additives in other chemical reactions.
