Description:1,3-Dimethyl-5-pyrazolone is a tautomeric compound that can undergo a reversible reaction with metal carbonates to form alkali metal phenacyls. The reaction rate of 1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone with potassium carbonate was found to be faster than the other alkali metals. The reaction products were found to be pyrazoles and phenacyls in the ratios 3:1 and 2:1 respectively. The active methylene group in this compound is sulfinyl, which has been shown to react with methyl alcohols to form methyl ethers. This compound is also an isomeric mixture of two enantiomers (1R,2S; 1S,2R).
