2,6-Dimethylaniline is a chemical inhibitor that binds to the active site of the enzyme p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of p-hydroxybenzoic acid to benzoic acid. 2,6-Dimethylaniline prevents this conversion, and thus limits the production of benzoic acid. The optimum concentration for 2,6-dimethylaniline is 0.1 mM in humans. 2,6-Dimethylaniline has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies. It also inhibits reaction mechanisms involving transfer reactions and polymerase chain reactions.
