Description

5,5-Dimethyldihydrofuran-2-one is a molecule that is found in nature and has been studied extensively because of its potential use as an anticancer drug. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells but not normal cells. The most common type of cancer cell death induced by 5,5-dimethyldihydrofuran-2-one is apoptosis. This molecule also inhibits the production of epoxides and hydroxyl groups, which are important for cellular metabolism. 5,5-Dimethyldihydrofuran-2-one can be used as a pheromone for insects and is often used as a starting material for the synthesis of other molecules. The reaction products of 5,5-dimethyldihydrofuran-2-one are biodegradable and degradable.
