Dipropyl-malonic acid diethyl ester (DPMAE) is an alkylation agent that has been used in the synthesis of medicines. It is a solid catalyst that can be used as a medicine for pest control and hydroxide solution. DPMAE reacts with magnesium to form an alkanoic acid and electrons, which are then transferred to an acetonitrile molecule to produce glycol esters. The glycol esters can then be reacted with malonic acid, forming the desired product.
