3,5-Dimethoxybenzonitrile is a chemical that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. It is also an effective anticancer drug that has been evaluated clinically. The mechanism by which 3,5-dimethoxybenzonitrile inhibits cancer cell growth is not yet known. This chemical binds to the CB2 receptor, which is located on tumor cells and other tissues. It may also inhibit the release of chloride ions from the cell membrane, leading to decreased levels of cyclic AMP. This chemical can be synthesized using a Grignard reagent and reacting it with an ethyl chloride molecule. The synthesis requires two steps: (1) addition of magnesium metal to an ethyl bromide solution; followed by (2) reaction of the magnesium with methyl iodide or methyl sulfate in a solution containing ether and alcohols.
