1,2-Dimethoxybenzene is a phenolic compound that is used as a biocide in wastewater treatment. It has inhibitory properties against bacteria and fungi. 1,2-Dimethoxybenzene inhibits the growth of bacterial and fungal cells by binding to hydrogen atoms on the aromatic ring, which blocks the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and prevents the molecule from adopting its most stable conformation. This causes an increase in acidity and conformational changes in the molecule, leading to cell death. The protonated form of 1,2-dimethoxybenzene can also act as a reducing agent through transfer reactions or reaction mechanisms.
