1,2-Diphenoxyethane is a diphenyl ether that has been used as a carbonyl group. It is orthoboric acid-permeable and has high kinetic energy. It also has an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain that is substituted with a hydroxyl group at one end. The molecule is colorless and water-soluble in the solid state. 1,2-Diphenoxyethane can be prepared from the reaction of 2-benzoylbenzoic acid with phenol and formaldehyde. 1,2-Diphenoxyethane can be synthesized by heating 1,4-dibromo-2-butene together with sodium hydroxide to produce a mixture of 1,2-, 1,3-, and 2,3-dibromoalkenes. The viscosity of the reaction solution increases as the concentration of 1,2-diphenoxyethane increases.
