2,6-Dichloro-4-nitrophenol (DNP) is a reactive organic compound that is used in the manufacture of other chemicals. This drug has been shown to induce a strong electrochemical impedance response in model systems and cells. DNP has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as proton pumps and caspase, which may be responsible for its acute toxicities. In addition, DNP has been shown to react with proteins and DNA, leading to cell death by apoptosis independent of caspase activation. It has also been shown to inhibit the activity of drug metabolism enzymes such as CYP3A4, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19. The potential for DNP to cause drug interactions makes it an unsuitable candidate for use in clinical trials.
