3,4-Dichlorophenylacetonitrile is a potent dopamine receptor antagonist. It has been shown to inhibit the uptake of dopamine in ovary cells and serotonin in serotoninergic cells. 3,4-Dichlorophenylacetonitrile has also been used as an analytical reagent for the determination of dopamine, serotonin, and other related amines. This compound is also commonly used as a disinfectant or an ovary cell culture medium. 3,4-Dichlorophenylacetonitrile can be synthesized by reacting chloroacetone with hydrogen cyanide and sodium nitrite in acetic acid.
