Dimethyl azelate is an ester that is used as a solvent for paints and inks. It can be synthesized by reacting glycol ethers with fatty acids or methyl myristate, which are synthetic aliphatic hydrocarbons. Dimethyl azelate has a viscosity of 1.0 Pa·s at 25°C. The reaction products of dimethyl azelate are hydroxyl groups, fatty acids, and alkanoic acid. Dimethyl azelate has been shown to have the ability to inhibit the growth of mutant strains of bacteria that cause anthrax and botulism when it is applied topically. Dimethyl azelate also inhibits polymorphonuclear leucocytes and has been used to help treat acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
