Dabigatran is an oral prodrug that is converted to dabigatran etexilate by esterases in the blood. Dabigatran etexilate is an anticoagulant that inhibits thrombin formation and also prevents the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. The drug is used for the prevention of stroke or embolism in people with atrial fibrillation, as well as treatment and prevention of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Dabigatran etexilate has a long half-life of 15-20 hours, meaning that it can be administered once daily.
