Description:Decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) is a brominated flame retardant that is used in the treatment of wastewater. DBDPE has been shown to be effective at reducing the concentration of metal hydroxide, such as lead and copper, and fatty acids in the wastewater. DBDPE binds to metal ions and prevents them from forming new complexes with other metals or organic molecules. This binding can also cause changes to the mitochondrial membrane potential, which may lead to cell death. The effects of DBDPE have been studied using an in vivo model on adrenocortical carcinoma cells and human serum. DBDPE was found to inhibit the production of progesterone by these cells, leading to decreased cell proliferation rates.
