Description

5,5-Dimethylhydantoin is a disinfectant that is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is used as an analytical reagent in electron microscopy to determine the presence of sodium in anhydrous sodium. 5,5-Dimethylhydantoin has been shown to inhibit efflux pumps in Staphylococcus aureus with an IC50 value of 0.27 mM. This drug also forms hydrogen bonds with the nitrogen atoms of glutamine residues in the bacterial cell wall, which disrupts cell membrane permeability and inhibits protein synthesis. 5,5-Dimethylhydantoin has also been shown to be corrosive to metals such as iron and copper.
