2,4-Dichlorotoluene is a solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique that can be used to extract 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid from a reaction vessel. The reaction proceeds in a solvent-free environment and is carried out under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas. Reaction selectivity is determined by the relative rates of the competing reactions. A metal ion catalyst, such as copper or iron, may be added to increase the rate of reaction. The molecular descriptors for this compound include molecular weight, number of rotatable bonds, polarizability index and dipole moment. The extraction yield is 95% with a reaction solution pH of 1.5-2 and an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.
