2,4-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane is a reactive chemical that participates in the formation of ion-exchanges and other reactions. It is an intermediate in the production of chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as vinyl chloride. 2,4-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane also reacts with acetaldehyde to produce 2,5-dimethylhexanedione. This reaction proceeds by bond cleavage with acid catalyst and is reversibly catalyzed. The product of this reaction has been shown to be a carbohydrate with aluminium.
