The Friedel-Crafts reaction is the chemical reaction in which an aromatic hydrocarbon reacts with an alkyl halide to form a benzene derivative. This reaction can be catalyzed by a variety of solid acids and bases, including m-dichlorobenzene. The reaction mechanism begins when the m-dichlorobenzene reacts with water vapor to form hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid then reacts with the dichlorobenzene to form chlorobenzene, which is then reacted with the alkyl halide to produce the desired benzene derivative. M-dichlorobenzene has been shown to be an effective catalyst for acylation reactions due to its stability and solubility in organic solvents.
The optimum concentration for this process is around 0.1% (by weight) of m-dichlorobenzene, although concentrations as high as 1% have been shown to be effective.
