This organic solvent has been shown to be toxic to rats, with a median lethal dose (LD) of 880 mg/kg. The LD50 for mice is 590 mg/kg. Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether is also flammable and can be used as a reaction medium for the synthesis of other compounds. It has high solubility in water, which makes it suitable for use in wastewater treatment applications. It has relatively low vapor pressure and thermal expansion coefficient, which make it an excellent choice for electronics manufacturing. Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether is reactive with hydrogen bonds, making it useful in kinetic studies.
