Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether is an organic compound that is used as a solvent. It can be found in many items including paints, lacquers, enamels, and varnishes. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether is a colorless liquid with a faint sweet odor. It has good thermal stability and low toxicity. The complexation of diethylene glycol dibutyl ether with magnesium salt and the formation of stable complexes is due to the hydroxyl groups on the diethylene glycol molecule. This reaction mechanism can be explained by the formation of hydrogen bonds between the magnesium ion and the oxygen atoms on the diethylene glycol molecule. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether reacts with water to form diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and ethoxyethanol. X-ray crystal structures reveal that it contains nitrogen atoms.
