Di(ethylene glycol) vinyl ether (DEGVE) is a polymerization initiator that is soluble in water and organic solvents. It is used to synthesize polymers of various molecular weights by cationic polymerization, which are used in wastewater treatment, as a human serum substitute and as a polycarboxylic acid. DEGVE is also used as a reactive agent for the preparation of samples for mass spectroscopy studies. The carbonyl group on the molecule reacts with hydroxyl groups to form an ester bond. This reaction occurs at low temperatures (0-25°C). DEGVE also has been shown to be a cross-linking agent that initiates the formation of three-dimensional networks in fatty acids. The phase transition temperature for this material ranges from -10°C to 20°C. Reaction solutions containing DEGVE will undergo phase transitions from liquid to solid at this temperature range, depending on the concentration of DE
