2,4-Dimethyl-8-hydroxyquinoline (DMQ) is a phenolic compound that emits light when it reacts with oxygen. DMQ has been shown to result in emissions at wavelengths of 600-800 nm and can be used as a fluorescent dye in electroluminescent and photoluminescent devices. This molecule has a ligand that absorbs the visible light spectrum between 400-700 nm, so its emission peaks at 800 nm. DMQ also has spectroscopic properties that are sensitive to the environment. It is capable of emitting light in the presence of aluminum and phenolic compounds, which are commonly found in plastics.
