Dithiouracil is a vitamin B-6 antagonist that inhibits the conversion of the amino acid tryptophan to niacin (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Dithiouracil has been shown to have photochemical properties in UV light, which are due to hydrogen bonding interactions and carbonyl oxygens. It has also been shown to be toxic to many types of bacteria. The biological properties of dithiouracil have been investigated in a number of studies. It is thought that this compound may act as an inhibitor of ribonucleic acid synthesis by reacting with the protonated form of the molecule and forming stable complexes with it. The molecule then reacts with hydrogen atoms to produce tautomers, which are a part of its reaction mechanism. The biological properties of dithiouracil have not yet been fully elucidated, but it is known that it can cause mutations in bacteria cells.
