3,3'-Dinitro diphenyl disulfide is a sulfa drug that inhibits the growth of bacteria and has been shown to be an effective treatment for cervical cancer. It is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with sulfhydryls on the bacterial cell wall by displacement of the sulfhydryl group. 3,3'-Dinitro diphenyl disulfide also inhibits protein synthesis and DNA replication in bacteria, leading to cell death. This chemical is synergistic with other drugs such as maduramicin ammonium and salinomycin sodium in treating infections caused by tenella. 3,3'-Dinitro diphenyl disulfide binds to the sulfur atom of cysteine residues on proteins in the bacterial cell wall by a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The reaction leads to release of a sulfenic acid or sulfinic acid from cysteine residues, which inhibits cell division.
