2,3-Dimethylhydroquinone is an aromatic hydrocarbon that can be synthesized by the asymmetric synthesis of 2-methylbenzaldehyde. It has been shown to scavenge free radicals and reactive oxygen species and has been studied as a potential chemopreventive agent for degenerative diseases. 2,3-Dimethylhydroquinone has also been shown to form covalent adducts with proteins. The main kinetic process in this reaction is sulfonation, which leads to the formation of oxindole and hydroxy group containing products.
2,3-Dimethylhydroquinone can be used in the synthesis of novel drugs for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
