Digoxigenin is a naturally occurring compound that binds to the penicillin-binding protein in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Digoxigenin has been used as a marker for immunohistochemical staining of gland cells, which are found in many organs, including the heart. It has also been used to label monoclonal antibodies and polymerase chain reaction primers. The pharmacokinetic properties of digoxigenin have been studied in human serum and papillary muscle tissue from hearts.
